Being Present in the Midst of Tragedy

Thursday, April 12, was an especially difficult day for our community. A troubled man getting evicted from his home decided to take matters in his own hands and gun down the sheriff on scene and locksmith attempting to deliver the eviction notice. This did not need to happen, but it did. In the span of only a few hours, a shooting turned into a full-fledged evacuation as the suspect had automatic weapons and explosives. The evacuation and standoff lasted for hours, into the morning hours of Friday. As a church, we had the opportunity to minister to those that were displaced. We fed them, clothed many, entertained the kids and counseled the hurting. We were with them. Then… and now.

The once blossoming community of Whispering Woods seems to be backsliding to the days of the Prescott Estates, aka the “ZOO”. Thursday was evidence of this. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Change can happen. But it will take you, me, this church, this neighborhood, local businesses, and a desire to transform. And it won’t work if the church stays in the building. It must go out to make real change happen.

UPDATE: What Project Community is Doing Now.

Project Community has been going through lots of changes the past few months (which explains the lack of content on the site). For the past few months, we have been discussing the methods and means we have been using to reach and help transform our church and communities. From this, we have developed a new strategy that will allow for cooperative effort to be formed in order to accomplish the goals God has given us.

What does this look like?

We have a team of volunteers leading the charge, under the direction of pastor Russ Cantu.
We have an identified process: how the leadership team will begin the process of community wide transformation
We have identified target areas: communities in which we see God moving and shaking.

What are the next steps in this process?

Our team will be coordinating with church small group and adult bible fellowship leaders in order to create a church-wide ownership of the process.
Our team will coordinate a massive survey process throughout the target areas in order to determine community assets and leaders.
Our team will identify assets and leaders from the survey results and begin to set a process for how we can accomplish a singular goal with identified community leaders, alongside the people of the target zones.

Project Community is breaking down the walls and bursting through the seams as we reach our community and meet their needs. Why? We don’t do this FOR community; we do this WITH community. Because it’s all about a shared vision. We all own this thing we call Prescott. So let’s do this together. As one. United in purpose and cause.

3rd Modesto Bee Spread:

We wrapped the latest Project Community event yesterday. In total, over 200 people were sent home with meals for their families. It’s been amazing to see the community embrace a new way of doing things: WITH community and not FOR community.

We had over 100 volunteers throughout the day, who were there for no other reason that to say we support you, as individuals and as a community. Our 200 plus event participants gladly served alongside of those who just came to be a willing hand.

The end game: Our community is showing up for one another, and people are noticing.

Community Unites to Feed Families

Thanksgiving is a special time where we celebrate the many blessings that have been poured out on us. In deed, there is a lot to be thankful for. But the reality is that for many families, Thanksgiving is a difficult time. Many are reminded of just how hard of a year it has been and some aren’t seeing a way out. We would like to curb those thoughts and bring hope to those hurting, and we think you do as well.

In years past, we have handed out cooked meals or bags of non-perishable items. Through this process, a new thought arose- How can we do things better; different? What if we can bring the community together to achieve a common goal (much like we have done through our Backpacks Drives for Kids and our recent Clothes Closet)? We know that times are more than rough and people are struggling, and as a church, we want to be leaders in supporting families.

Therefore, on the day before Thanksgiving (November 24th, 2010), our church will be leading a completely different kind of project for the community. We will be gathering community members on the campus of the church from 1000a-500p, where we can all cook Thanksgiving meals together, and give to everyone as they have need. This project is for everyone.

If someone has a need for their family, they can come down and cook their family a meal as well as help cook another family’s meal. If someone has more than enough for their own family, they can give back by cooking alongside those who don’t have anything. What this does is bring together those that have resources with those that do not, and shows how we are all united in this struggle, as a community, and how joy arises from that.

Clothes Closet Wrap

Dozens of volunteers, even more donors and close to a ton (literally) of clothes became available to our community this past Sunday. The end result: The needs of over 100 families (that’s a conservative estimate) were met as they carried off bags of clothing that would take care of their families for months to come.

More than that, we helped foster community on a deeper level and helped stage another success in the future. Thank you to all who took part in this venture and keep an eye out for the next big thing to hit Project Community.

After two weeks of gathering clothing for the free community wide clothing distribution (Sunday, October 31, 2010), it took four hours of unpacking, sorting and staging to get ready. Really, it’s crazy to think what a community can do when they team up together to accomplish a goal. It all happens Sunday now.

Need a little extra help this year with clothes? Do your kids need a winter coat or just a few items to make a wardrobe? Perhaps you might even need a few things. As a church and community, we want you to know we are all together in this. We are meant to meet one another’s needs.

That’s what we’re doing this Sunday. It all starts at 1100a at Prescott Church. First come; first serve. Take whatever you need. Everything from women’s blouses to men’s pants. Kids clothing and even items for infants. So tell your friends; tell your neighbors. Let’s do this, together!
